AC troubleshooter
Why isn't my AC cooling?
Most AC problems start in one of five places. Tap each one to see the signs and the usual fix.
Dirty filter & coil
The most common cause. Dust blocks the air, so the room cools slowly and the coil can ice up.
- Weak airflow from the indoor unit
- Musty smell when it starts
- Fixed by cleaning the filters and coil
Blocked drain
Water from cooling runs out through a small drain pipe. When it clogs, water drips from the indoor unit.
- Water dripping inside or down the wall
- Gurgling sound from the unit
- Fixed by clearing the drain line and pan
Low gas (leak)
If the AC is low on refrigerant, it has a leak. It blows air that's cool but not cold, and pipes may ice up.
- Ice on the copper pipes
- Not cold even on low settings
- Fixed by finding the leak, then recharging
Outdoor unit
The outdoor unit pushes heat out. A dirty coil, a dead fan or a failed capacitor stops the cooling.
- Outdoor fan not spinning
- Humming but not starting
- Fixed by cleaning, or replacing the capacitor or fan
Power & settings
Sometimes it's the supply: a tripped breaker, loose wiring, low voltage or the remote on the wrong mode.
- Unit dead or switching off by itself
- Breaker trips when it starts
- Fixed by checking the breaker, wiring and settings

Service, repair or replace your AC?
Three quick questions and you'll get a likely answer and a checklist to send to a technician.
A service should do it
A general guide, not a diagnosis. A technician needs to see the unit to say for sure.
Protect yourself
Six rules for hiring an AC technician in Trinidad
Most bad AC jobs come down to the same few mistakes. Avoid them and you avoid most of the risk.
Get the price first
For the repair or install, including parts and gas. Agree it before work starts.
Leak before gas
If it needs gas, ask where the leak is and how it will be fixed. Top-ups alone don't last.
Ask to see the fault
A good technician shows you the dirty coil, the burnt capacitor or the leak.
Size it right
For new units, ask how the BTU size was chosen for your room.
Check it cools
Before the technician leaves, check the air is cold and the drain is running outside.
Keep the paperwork
Receipts, the model number and any warranty on parts or installation.

How much does AC servicing or repair cost in Trinidad?
It depends on the unit, the fault and the parts or gas needed. The technician will give you a price after checking the unit.
How often should I service my AC?
Units that run every day usually need a service every three to six months in Trinidad's heat and dust.
Why is my AC not cooling?
The usual causes are a dirty filter or coil, a blocked drain, low gas from a leak, an outdoor unit fault or a power problem. Try the troubleshooter above.
